Don’t let fear or anxiety keep you from getting the dental care you deserve. Consider oral sedation to help you relax and feel at ease while you are in our care.

What is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation is one of three sedation options we offer at Lincoln Crossings Dental Care. It consists of taking a pill that will relax you and keep you calm while you are undergoing any type of dental procedure. You can only get oral sedation if it is prescribed by a doctor. Oral sedation will keep you in a deeply relaxed state throughout your dental procedure to help you overcome your fears and have a more positive experience.

How Oral Sedation Work

Of course every case is unique, but here is a general idea of what to expect if you are considering oral sedation:

Step 1. Discussion with Dr. Stryker or a member of your dental team —

Once you have expressed your interest in oral sedation, you will need to answer some health questions to make sure that it is safe for you. Dr. Stryker will use the information you give him to determine whether oral sedation is right for you, so it is important that you be honest and as thorough as possible when reviewing your health and medical history. After you have been cleared for oral sedation, you will be given information about all the benefits and any possible risks.

Step 2. Prescription —

Dr. Stryker will prescribe a sedative based on the results of your health assessment. There are several different medications used for oral sedation. The one you will receive will depend on your medical history, any possible drug interactions, and the possibility of an allergic reaction.

Step 3. Preparing for the Procedure —

The night before your procedure, be sure to get plenty of restful sleep. Dr. Stryker will let you know how much time it will take for the sedative to take effect and when to take it before your appointment. Once you’ve taken the pill, you should not drive anywhere. Be sure to arrange transportation to and from your appointment.

Step 4. The Procedure —

Once you’ve arrived at the office and get checked in, Dr. Stryker will perform your procedure while you are completely relaxed. You will be conscious for the entire procedure, able to answer questions and follow directions. However, you will be in a state of deep relaxation, and once the procedure is over, you will have very little memory of it.

Step 5. After the Procedure —

Once your procedure is completed and you are ready to leave the office, you will not be able to drive anywhere. Please have prearranged transportation back to your home. The effects of the sedation will take several more hours to wear off. You will likely feel drowsy and a little groggy for the rest of the day, so do not plan to go back to work or to another appointment the same day. You will need the rest of the day to relax until the effects have completely dissipated.

Step 6. After Care —

It is very important to follow Dr. Stryker’s after-care instructions for your health and safety, as well as for the success of your dental treatment. If you have any questions or concerns after your procedure, do not hesitate to contact our team. If you experience any complications after your procedure, contact us immediately.

How safe is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation is perfectly safe when administered by a trained professional like Dr. Stryker. Side effects and allergic reactions may occur very rarely, which is why it is so important to be honest and thorough when discussing your health and medical history with your dental team. We want you to have the best possible experience at Lincoln Crossings Dental Care, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that your procedure goes smoothly.
